Candid photographs of people often result in the revelation of a moment of time, rather than a study of character or physicality. Cartier-Bresson called it 'The decisive moment', which was not necessarily the peak of action, but included the peak of composition and light. A moment earlier or later might not have the same symmetry. Sometimes it's luck, sometimes it's patience, waiting for the subject(s) to be in the best position. I think the best example of this is the photo of the five nuns. Their positions, contrasting colours of their habits, light and shadow seem perfectly balanced. What they are up to gives the image food for thought.
